We've been in the market for a new mattress for a few years. I've started searching a few times; in fact, I purchased a Purple mattress for my son a few years ago and wrote a blog about it, which you can find here. However, I wasn't convinced that I wanted a Purple mattress for myself. My list of 'wants' included a mattress that would help my partner, my boyfriend, sleep through the night, as he has a very hard time doing so. Additionally, I wanted something organic/sustainable and comfortable because returning a mattress or cycling through several to find the right one was definitely not on my list.
Buying a mattress online, sight unseen and bed untested, is not easy in my opinion. But, maybe buying a mattress in general is challenging. How do we really know what's best for us? We barely understand what foods are right for our bodies, let alone make a $1000-10,000+ purchase with limited knowledge about our sleep habits or best practices. There are so many claims out there.
In my research and mattress reviews, I read many online reviews. For example, this review does not mention the Avocado King mattress I ended up choosing, but I narrowed down my list to a few, with Avocado at the top. However, purchasing a King is quite an investment. Awara offered a comparable mattress at a lower cost, but then I saw a notice on Avocado's website that caught my attention.
When reading reviews, I prefer word of mouth, but not many people I know buy mattresses regularly, and if they do, they likely aren't looking for the type I was seeking. So, I read many reviews, and it can almost become exhausting because they are either overly positive or negative. I definitely don't trust influencers, as they are compensated in some way and influenced by the brands they represent. One review that stuck in my mind was, 'I never was able to sleep until now.' I thought that might be an exaggeration, but the idea of my boyfriend being able to sleep kept that review in the back of my mind.
Even after deciding on the Avocado mattress and agreeing on the price, I hesitated to hit 'buy.' That's when the process actually went negative. The online store was a bit clunky. I chose the Avocado Green Mattress, size King, with a medium pillow top, and added sheets and a bed frame. I followed the instructions carefully for setting up the mattress and using the right frame, as failing to do so means you can't return it. However, I accidentally completed the purchase with my stored credit card, so I called customer service. The representative was very rude from the start. His tone was flippant, and he said there was nothing he could do other than cancel my order.
When I expressed my frustration, he suggested I cancel my order and redo it with a salesperson, with a hint of snark. I didn't want to extend the process. I was committed to the product and would let this slide. I then asked when the mattress would arrive, as it says it ships in three days, and he snapped that it's custom-made and dependent on various factors.
The frame and sheets arrived quickly, but tracking the mattress was challenging, possibly due to their backend or website issues. I resorted to using their chat feature, which was also a 1 out of 5 experience. Initially, it seemed promising, as I received a message (albeit very delayed) that a named person would be dedicated to my delivery. However, every exchange took about 5 hours. The representative noted that the delivery was delayed due to material shortages and offered a discount.
The mattress finally arrived in a surprisingly small box for such a large bed. It was super easy to put together, and the delivery service was nice and easy to work with. I realized they offer White Glove service, which I would have chosen if my boyfriend hadn't been there to help with the heavy lifting and setup.
My advice is to follow the rules. From getting the right frame and bed to setting it up correctly, it's clear that if you don't like it and haven't followed the rules, you won't get your money back.
But the bed itself is like heaven. It was worth it. This bed is pure bliss, and my boyfriend now sleeps like a baby. The first night, I was cautiously optimistic. It's much bigger than our Queen, so the dogs have their own space. My boyfriend, who rarely slept for more than a few hours, now sleeps soundly. He's also a skeptic and has openly praised the bed. I love it too; I can sleep on my side or back and don't even realize where I am because I sleep so soundly. Interestingly, I haven't been dreaming, which is unusual for me, while he never used to dream and now does.
I highly recommend the mattress for its quality, organic materials, and U.S. manufacturing. They even note that the writing on the box is in soy ink, which I appreciate for its sustainability. I assume my experience with customer service was just an anomaly.
